Pipers: photo courtesy of the Scottish Arts Council Harpist - photo courtesy of the Scottish Arts Council Scotland’s traditional arts are, in many respects, the very essence at the centre of Scotland. “Auld Lang Syne”, Robert Burn's great song of fellowship, is now sung on every continent by all races and nations. The sound of the pipes echo around the globe at times of celebration.

Scottish culture is now part of the essential culture of the world. It is these traditional arts, whether in dance or song, crafts or stories, which form the backbone of Scotland’s cultural present and can remind us of our past while creating pointers to the future.

Here are some of the major organisations involved with Traditional Arts in Scotland.

Scottish Arts Council
“Our aim is to nurture and sustain our traditional culture through a range of initiatives.”

Craftscotland
“This is a pilot for 'craftscotland', a portal and identity promoting the diversity and quality of Craft in Scotland.”

Scottish Storytelling Centre
“The strategy of the Scottish Storytelling Centre is to stimulate and support local initiative while offering models of best practice and inclusion. It is assisted in this work by The Scottish Arts Council and local authorities across Scotland.”

Robert Burns Federation
“The definitive educational internet site for beginners and experts alike, and a growing interactive resource on all matters relating to the life and times of Robert Burns.”

Scottish Music Centre
“Scottish Music Centre aims to be a gateway to the complete national music resource and a supporter and promoter of all of Scotland’s music. The Centre exists to document, promote and support Scottish music of all genres.”

The Living Tradition
“This site is growing steadily and already is one of the largest sites covering mainly the Folk & Traditional Music of the British Isles, Ireland and what is often called 'Celtic' music. This site is provided by The Living Tradition magazine.”

National Piping Centre
“The Great Highland Bagpipe, perhaps the best known of Scotland's musical instruments and an ambassador for Scotland throughout the world, is accorded new prominence by the founding of The Piping Centre. We serve as a national and international centre of excellence for the instrument and its music.”
