Basic search

Basic search is one of Scotland's Culture's main searching tools. When using the basic search within the service you will be searching all of the records of electronic resources held in Scotland's Culture. Basic search has all the search options available to you.

The options are author, title or subject keyword: by entering an author's name in inverted order i.e., Burns, Robert or just Burns, a word in a title, or subject term, a keyword search will bring back any resources which include your search term within the title, author or subject of a resource. General keyword search will return any records which have your search term entered in the title, subject, author field or notes part of a record.

The browse searches within Scotland's Culture will take you to an A-Z list of either titles, subjects or authors, your position in this list will depend upon the search term you have entered

For example:

- if you search for Scotland in the title browse, the search results will be a list of titles beginning with Scotland and any titles listed alphabetically after Scotland.
- if you search for Burns, Robert in the author browse, the search results will be a list of authors or names beginning with Burns, Robert and authors or names listed alphabetically after Burns.
- if you search for football in the subject browse, the search results will be a list of subjects beginning with football and any subjects listed alphabetically after football.

Some users may find that parts of Scotland’s Culture are inaccessible from within an institution that has firewall protection. This may be because parts of Scotland’s Culture use an untypical port number (8000). To rectify this you should contact your IT department who will be able address the problem.
